The Somme in the Great War / Memory / Thiepval
Client: Cube3 and The Thiepval Project
Made with Great War historian Michael Stedman for the new Visitor Centre at Thiepval on the Somme, and showing the British perspective. Each fifteen-minute piece knits together film stock from 1916 and 1918 with clips from the locations today and authentic sound fx, assidiously researched and crafted into the mix. With music by Arvo Pärt and George Butterworth, and an emotional narration by the actor Christopher Timothy, the films form a compelling and haunting account of one of the most tragic and miserable chapters of British and European history. On permanent display at Thiepval, the films are also available on DVD. The first film, The Somme in the Great War, has been adopted by the Royal British Legion and incorporated into their Schools’ Packs. Sent to every school in the UK, the Packs form a key part of the RBL’s Remembrance Outreach programme
